What Robin Williams Teaches Us

I don’t have a soap box. I have a blog. When I heard the news about Robin Williams passing due to an apparent suicide at first I felt really sad that someone so ‘energetic’ and gifted could be so sad or down that he would take his own life. Then I thought about myself. I’m not shy about my depression because I tend not to be shy about anything. Looking at many of the social media posts my friends have posted the common theme I’ve seen is “who would have known?”.  That’s the bitch of depression. Unless someone fesses up to it there is a good chance you don’t know.

Depression is a medical issue. It’s not some excuse used to be lazy, or sad, or unmotivated. It is a legitimate chemical imbalance in your brain that creates a whole cluster of issues both physical and emotional.  It needs to be treated and in all honesty, it needs to become a conversation piece that isn’t so stigmatized.

Because someone is depressed it doesn’t mean they aren’t loving, caring, outgoing, passionate, or human. It doesn’t mean the person can’t interact correctly with others or provide incredible insight on the world.  In fact some of the most fascinating, entertaining, and awesome people I’ve met in my life actually suffer from depression. I’ve coached athletes with depression.  I’ve helped friends with depression get through the toughest moments of sadness and feelings of suicide. I’ve lived through some really dark shit. Why do I share this? Because I am someone who wants to live a normal life. Have great friends. Improve others lives. Be a competitive athlete. Be a great wife and mom. I want to do something epic with my life. I want to do all of this and I can…one of my greatest obstacles though is a ‘rucksack’ of crap that I carry with me that is depression.

If you or someone you know suffers from depression the good news is you can treat it. I have had great success with therapy, medicine, diet changes, and hypnosis. One thing is for damn sure, go to a doctor if you’re not sure if you are depressed. A Psychiatrist is the best option as they have more experience with medicines and diagnosing your issues properly. Your primary care physician is an okay start if you don’t have the option of a psychiatrist.  If you need more information visit one of these sites:
